Pediatric Craniosacral Therapy

"As the twig is bent, so grows the tree".  Dr. William Sutherland

What is Craniosacral Therapy & why is it important for  infants & children?
The craniosacral system consists of the spinal cord, brain, membranes inside the cranium as well as 22 cranial bones,  and the cerebro-spinal fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord.  It extends from the bones of the skull, face, and mouth (the cranium) down to the sacrum, and it houses the central nervous system.  Craniosacral Therapy is a safe and gentle form of bodywork which uses a light touch to encourage the mind, body, heart, and spirit to heal itself.

During the birthing process the infant’s entire being undergoes a major transition, as does the mothers.  And, this natural process is often interrupted.  As a result, the infant can come into the world with birth-related trauma and an unfinished story. Craniosacral Therapy helps the infant (and mother) to complete their birth process, their story. As the mom and baby are intimately linked in this story, the resolution of it encourages babies to  be more comfortable within themselves and in the world, and at the same time  supports women becoming more confident and fulfilled in their role as mothers.

Common reasons parents seek Craniosacral Therapy:

  • A difficult birth; whether it be long labor or pushing stage, C-section, or use of instruments
  • The infant is "fussy", "grunty", or seems unhappy
  • The infant has a tendency to turn it's head to one side
  • Breastfeeding challenges
  • The infants breathing is labored or not consistent
  • A suggestion made by a Doctor, friend or Bodyworker
  • Sleeping concerns
  • Infant's head is shaped oddly, has ridges, etc.
  • Well-being of infant
  • One or both parents are anxious or worried all the time.

Craniosacral Therapy helps with these issues, as well:
  • Bonding & Attachment
  • Digestive issues; including Colic, Reflux, Constipation
  • Adoption and/or blended families
  • Reduces stress and hyperactivity
  • Cranial Malformations
  • Torticollis

Craniosacral Therapy helps older kids with:
  • Braces
  • Headaches/Migraines
  • TMJ Syndrome
  • Puberty:  handling big emotions and hormone changes
  • Emotional distress
  • Parent/child conflicts
  • Loss of family member or pet

The Craniosacral Session:
A Craniosacral session begins after a thorough consultation with your practitioner.  A session typically lasts an hour and it is preferable both parents attend each session. It is expected the infant will need to nurse during the session and the practitioner will make necessary accommodations available. The number of sessions recommended depends on the needs and responsiveness of the infant. Infants & children can experience a deep state of calm and well-being and may fall asleep on the table. Parents often report that their child appears relaxed and peaceful for days after the session, with a cumulative effect over a number of sessions.
