Lymph Drainage Massage
The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that help rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials. The primary function of the lymphatic system is to fight infection by transporting lymph, a fluid containing infection-fighting white blood cells, throughout the body. Lymph vessels carry lymph and its contents through the lymph nodes, where the fluid is purified. Eventually, this purified lymphatic fluid is returned to blood circulation. In the process, toxins are removed from the tissues and increased lymph flow helps to distribute immune cells throughout the body, reducing infection and speeding the healing of inflammation.
Lymph Drainage Massage (LDM) is a gentle massage which mimics the lymphatic system, employing repetitive strokes at a precise speed, rhythm, and pressure. In addition to improving the flow of fluids, LDM is also very relaxing. The repetitive movements reduce the body's "fight or flight" response to stress and stimulate the body's parasympathetic reaction, allowing the body to heal itself more efficiently. Although there is plenty benefit in receiving one session of LDM, it is a series of 3-60 minute sessions spaced ideally 1-2 weeks apart. |
